Artillio J. Martin

January 3, 1921 — July 6, 2023

Artillio "Tillie" "Pop" J. Martin, 102, of Bethlehem passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 3, 1921 he was the son of the late Genevieve (Orlando) and Donato Matteo. He was the loving husband of the late Sophia C. (Dodig) Martin. They were married for 71 years at the time of her passing.


Tillie's dedication to his country was evident in his time he proudly spent serving his country as a member of the United States Army during WWII where he earned 3 bronze stars. He spent time and helped support his family by joining the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to joining the Army. In his younger years, Tillie was a competitive Golden Glove boxer and enjoyed playing baseball. He was a life member of the BVFHA and the Coplay Saengerbund where he loved to Polka dance. Tillie also enjoyed trips to the casino, going for a walk, Musikfest and especially a cold beer on his patio with his family and neighbors.


He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Mary Weaver; and Suzanne Scott and husband, Van; son-in-law, Richard Morrissey, husband of the late Frances Morrissey; grandson, Jonathan Morrissey and wife, Melissa; great grandchildren, Nathaniel and his fiancé, Chelsea; and Charlotte; as well as great-great grandson, Jacob. Tillie was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Ralph and sisters, Theresa Mihalko and Rose Matteo.


A viewing will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. A viewing will also be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 from 10-11 a.m. in the funeral home with a service to follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held at Holy Saviour Cemetery.

Tillies family would like to thank Dr. Hoffman, Dr. Sundlof, Dr. Faroun and St. Luke's Hospice for the care and compassion they gave to Tillie.
