David A. Roberts

David Allen Roberts, 89, of Center Valley, PA, passed away May 27, 2022, at his home.

Born in Chicago, IL, he attended J. Sterling Morton High School, in Cicero, IL, where he played the position of guard on a basketball team that was a perennial state championship contender.

An athlete and a lover of sports his whole life, he raised his children to be active, with the result that three of his sons became golf professionals. He was proud of the fact that he sent all eight of his children to his college.

David Roberts attended Trinity College in Connecticut on an academic scholarship, where he played basketball and baseball. He took pride in the fact that he led the nation 1955 with the most fouls per basketball game. When drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955, he served in Germany, and played baseball and basketball during his eighteen months of active service.

A member of Saucon Valley Country Club for years, he relished the game of golf. He enjoyed his volunteer service for the club, especially when he assisted with the first Senior Open Golf Championship held at the club in 1992.

A member of the Bethlehem Steel Loop course of 1955, David Roberts was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company for forty years, in a number of increasingly significant positions. When he retired in 1995, he was General Manager of Sales. After retiring, he worked as a consultant for steel sales for many years.

He was married to his wife Shirley Moore Roberts for fifty-four years, devotedly caring for her during her final illness.

He is survived by his eight children, Robin and husband Les Wade, Gayle and husband Greg Pisklo, Linda and husband Ian Drake, David, Richard and wife Laura Roberts, Roger and fiance Jessica Armstrong, Kim and partner Clark Durant, and Scott and wife Katie Roberts; eight grandchildren, Jenny DeGoler and husband David DeGoler, Bryan Pisklo and fiance Kim Davis , Owen Drake, Russell Roberts, Leni Roberts, Alison Roberts and fianc Abhi Goyal, Amelia Roberts, Andrew Roberts, three step-grandchildren, Brooke Pierce and wife Kiva Pierce, Dylan Wade, and Chelsea Collins and Matt Collins, six step-great-grandchildren Amelia, Evangeline, and Isaac Pierce, and Grace, Josephine, and Theodore Wade Collins, and one great-grandson, Andrew DeGoler, niece Julie Stuchkus Lesley, nephew David Stuchkus, and Bryan Pisklos daughter, Kinley Pepin. David Roberts was predeceased by his parents, Jule and Ann Roberts, his sister Lynn Roberts Stuchkus, and his wife Shirley Moore Roberts. The family wishes to acknowledge the devoted services of Shirley Campbell to their fathers comfort over the last three years.

A visitation will be held at the Connell Funeral Home, Inc, 245 East Broad Street, Bethlehem, on Saturday, June 11, 2022, from 4:00pm until the time of the memorial service, in the funeral home, at 5:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the J. Wood Platt Scholarship, https://plattscholar.org/memorial-gifts/. This scholarship provides funds for golf caddies to support their undergraduate and graduate education.
