David G. Shelly, 89, of Bethlehem, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth. Born in Doylestown, he was the son of George and Marion (Moyer) Shelly and beloved husband of Nancy (Goldberg) Shelly.
After earning his bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College, Dave served in the United States Army before completing his master's degree in education at Lehigh University, where he met Nancy during a class. They shared a long and happy marriage.
Dave dedicated his career to the Bethlehem Area School District. He taught at Edgeboro, Hanover Elementary and Stevens schools before becoming principal of Donegan Elementary, Asa Packer Elementary and Northeast Middle School.
After retiring from education, Dave continued working alongside Nancy as a framer and partner in her fine art papercutting business. He framed her work for craft shows, transported her and her artwork, assisted with setup and breakdown, and formed lasting relationships with patrons and fellow craftspeople. Their shared work became another meaningful chapter in their life together.
Known for his quick wit and generous spirit, Dave loved reading, history and travel. He was deeply committed to Bethlehem, volunteering with civic and charitable organizations and serving as a poll worker and Democratic Ward Leader.
Above all, Dave will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to education, his lifelong service to the Bethlehem community and his genuine interest in others. As a teacher, principal, volunteer, mentor, neighbor and friend, he believed everyone deserved to be seen, heard and encouraged.
David is survived by his son, Adam Shelly and wife, Dr. Belma Sadikovic, of Walnut Creek, CA; daughter, Amanda Daja and husband, Jani, of Bethlehem; brother, William Shelly; four cherished grandchildren; and friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jessica Kinsley, and sister, Barbara Downey.
