Dr. Matilde E. Garcia, 65, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, entered eternal rest on October 9, 2026, at Lehigh Valley Hospital Hospice - Muhlenberg. Born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, she was the beloved daughter of the late Ismael Garcia and Matilde (Rios) Garcia.
Matilde devoted twenty-eight years of her professional life to educating children in the Bethlehem Area School District, serving as a teacher at Marvine Elementary School and Clearview Elementary School. Her commitment to education was rooted in a deep appreciation for learning and the important role educators play in shaping young lives. A dedicated lifelong learner, she earned her bachelor's degree from Interamericana University in San Germán, Puerto Rico; a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University in 1989; a Master of Education in Human Development from Lehigh University in 1999; and a Master of Science in Education from Wilkes University in 2000. She continued her academic pursuits by earning a Certificate in Educational Technology from Penn State University in 2002, another Master of Science in Education from Wilkes University in 2004, and a Ph.D. in Advanced Study in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University in 2005. Her extensive educational achievements reflected her intellectual curiosity, perseverance, and enduring commitment to personal and professional growth.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Matilde was a devoted Catholic and an active member of Holy Infancy Church. She generously shared her time and faith as a catechist and volunteer at Holy Infancy School. Her spirituality was an essential part of her life, bringing her comfort, inspiration, and strength. She held a special devotion to St. Thérèse of Lisieux and enjoyed reading about the saints, collecting their images and sculptures, watching religious films, singing spiritual hymns, and playing the guitar. Her faith remained a source of peace and a guiding presence throughout her life.
Beyond her professional accomplishments and religious devotion, Matilde found great joy in the experiences and relationships that made life meaningful. An avid reader, she delighted in spending time at Barnes & Noble, where her love of books and learning could flourish. She enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the United States, taking cruises, and returning to her beloved Puerto Rico. She had an appreciation for beauty and tradition, expressed through her love of flowers and the special care she took in decorating for the holidays. Most of all, she treasured the companionship of friends and the simple pleasure of gathering for lunch, sharing conversation, laughter, and memories. In the spring of 2026, she especially enjoyed visiting a dear friend in Washington, D.C., to admire the beauty of the cherry blossoms-a fitting reflection of her appreciation for life's special moments.
Matilde's life was enriched by family and friendships that remained close to her heart. She spoke of her brothers, Dr. Ismael Garcia and Dr. Cedar Ismael Garcia, both of Puerto Rico; her nephew, Diego Garcia; her nieces, Mara Falero and Linnea Garcia; and her cousin, Isuara Santiago. She will also be lovingly remembered by her dear friends Iris Cintron and Mary Colon, as well as her lifelong circle of friends affectionately known as "The Girlfriends." Bound by a friendship that began in childhood and endured through the years, this cherished group represented the lasting comfort, loyalty, and joy of lifelong companionship.
Matilde's generosity extended beyond her lifetime through her decision to be an organ donor. By donating her corneas, she has given another person the precious possibility of regaining sight-a profound and lasting gift that reflects the compassion and humanity she leaves behind.
Her family and friends extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Alfonse, Dr. Skandan and her team, Maritza Chica, Lehigh Valley Hospice, and the many nurses and healthcare professionals who provided attentive, compassionate care throughout Matilde's breast cancer treatment and final days. Their dedication, kindness, and support brought comfort to Matilde and those who loved her during a deeply difficult time.
Dr. Matilde E. Garcia leaves behind a legacy defined by educational excellence, unwavering faith, lifelong learning, cherished friendships, and a generous spirit. She will be remembered not only for her academic achievements and professional contributions, but also for the warmth of her presence, the sincerity of her relationships, and the meaningful connections she cultivated throughout her life. Her final gift of sight serves as a lasting testament to a life marked by purpose, compassion, and generosity. May she rest in the eternal peace of Christ, and may the light of her life continue to shine through the memories she leaves behind and the lives forever touched by her presence.
