Gayle E. Sloane

Gayle Elise Sloane (Buttner), 82, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Orange, NJ and raised in Morristown, Gayle spent most of her life in Hackettstown where she built a home full of love and raised her family alongside her beloved husband and high school sweetheart, William (Billy) Sloane. Together, they shared 58 beautiful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

A graduate of Assumption School and Bayley Ellard Catholic High School, Gayle was a natural caregiver who followed her calling into nursing. She attended All Souls Nursing School on Mt. Kemble Avenue and went on to enjoy a long, fulfilling career as a Registered Nurse at All Souls Hospital before joining Hackettstown Community Hospital in 1972. Her kindness, calm presence, and compassion touched the lives of countless patients and their families.

Our mother was best known for her quiet strength, selflessness, and kindness. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family and was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. "Nannie," as she was lovingly known, found her greatest joy in the company of her family, showering her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with love and never missing any event in their lives, big or small.

Her favorite pastimes, other than making family memories, were to bury her beautiful toes (lol!) in the sand while she basked in the sun at the Jersey shore, the annual trips to Cancun with our father and Aunt Jackie and Uncle Brad, and just being anywhere, anytime, with her Billy.

Our Mom's beauty radiated from within, her kind smile and soft brown eyes were a source of comfort and joy to all who knew her. She gave generously, never expecting anything in return. She was the heart of our family and although words cannot express how deeply she will be missed, we take solace in knowing that she is back in the arms of our beloved father, the love of her life. The legacy of their love endures in the lives of the family they nurtured and the values they instilled in us.

Gayle is survived by her devoted daughters Elizabeth Sloane-Rimer, Erin Thornton and husband Gregory, Meghan Anderson and husband George; adored grandchildren Andrew Rimer and wife Simone, William (Little Billy) Audelo and wife Ashley, Jacob Thornton, Abigayle Thornton, Thomas Anderson, Liam Anderson, Margaret Anderson; and her precious great-grandchildren Roman and Luca Audelo. She is also survived by her sister Brenda Nichols and her sister in heart Jacqueline Sloane, and her many loving nephews, nieces, and dear friends, especially Ellen Mitro. Gayle is predeceased by her loving husband, William Sloane, parents George and Margaret Buttner, and her brother George Buttner.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 12 pm on Friday, June 27th at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located at 302 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840, with a celebration of Gayle's life to follow.
