Gloria Jean Almer (Mitman) also known as Big Momma or the Brownie Lady, 83, of Montgomery, PA formerly of Lower Nazareth, PA went home on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at her daughter's home after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was the wife of the late John L. Almer who passed away February 14, 1990. She was the daughter of the late Pauline (Baltz) and Russel Mitman, of Nazareth.
Gloria was a special education teacher in the Allentown School District for 32 years before retiring in 1994. She was a 1960 graduate of Nazareth Area High School and she graduated from Kutztown University with a bachelors of education and a minor in music in 1964.
Gloria enjoyed helping with the special Olympics when she was teaching and loved giving hugs. She served on her church consistory, was an assistant girl scout leader, softball coach and helped with Northampton County Animal 4-H. She was a member of the Allentown Women's Teacher Association until her retirement. She enjoyed being involved with the Nazareth Chapter of the Red Hats of the Barony of the Rose. Gloria attended many years of marching band competitions when her daughter and grandchildren were in the band. She served on the board of the Nazareth Band Parents; she was also known as "Mrs. A or the Brownie Lady". She also served on the Northampton County Board of Elections and worked the polls in Bethlehem Township for many years.
Gloria is survived by her daughter, Cheryl and her husband, Dwight Wallace III, of Montgomery, PA and honorary daughter, Sue Milne and her husband, Ron, of Wilmington, DE; grandson, Joseph Oblick, of Lower Nazareth; granddaughter, Briana Ceaser and her husband, Eric, of Lower Nazareth; two step-granddaughters, Alexandria Frackman and her husband, Clint, of Proctor, PA and Giselle Latta and her husband, Greg, of Norfolk, VA; step great-grandson, Benjamin; brother, Luther Mitman, of Lower Nazareth; and several grand dogs.
In addition to her husband and parents, Gloria is preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, Anita (Straub) and John Almer; two sisters-in-law's, Georgene Cser and Joann Mitman; and two brothers-in-law's, Crpl. Paul Almer and George Almer.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, July 6, 2025 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018. Another viewing will be held on Monday, July 7, 2025 from 9-10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with a funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will conclude services at Hope Cemetery.
