Joseph T. Mayer, 75, of Freemansburg, passed away peacefully at his home on October 18, 2025. Born on September 1, 1950, in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Charles S. and Margaret (Jozsa) Mayer.
Joe was a graduate of Freedom High School and dedicated much of his life to hard work, community, and the preservation of local history. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation for over 22 years and took great pride in his time with the company. After his years at the Steel, Joe continued his work ethic as a truck driver, enjoying the sense of purpose and independence it brought.
His passion for Bethlehem's steelmaking heritage continued well beyond his career. Joe served as President of the Steelworkers Archives, where he led tours, shared stories, and worked tirelessly to preserve the history of the mills and the people who worked them. He found joy in educating others about the legacy of Bethlehem Steel and ensuring that future generations would never forget its impact on the world.
Joe also loved cars, and his appreciation for them grew into a lifelong hobby of collecting them. In addition, he served as President of the Lehigh Valley Pocono Sports Hall of Fame, supporting local athletes and celebrating their accomplishments.
A proud supporter and fan of Liberty High School Football, Joe could often be found assisting efforts to help the program.
He is survived by his cousin, Ronald Donchez, and will be missed by his colleagues, and friends.
Services have been entrusted to Connell Funeral Home, Bethlehem, and will be private at the convenience of the family.
