Richard A. Girard

Aug 18, 1934 — Sep 2, 2026

Bethlehem Township

Richard A. Girard, 92, of Bethlehem Township, passed away on September 2, 2026. Born August 18, 1934, in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Arthur and Eleanor (Ueberroth) Girard. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Mildred "Millie" M. Girard, who passed away on December 24, 2007.

Richard was a devoted family man whose generosity, strength, and unwavering support were felt by those fortunate enough to know him. Tough and strong throughout his life, he was also remarkably sharp and self-aware. He faced life on his own terms and fought until the very end.

A lifelong educator, Richard was a graduate of Moravian College and attended Lehigh University. He dedicated more than 35 years to teaching English in the Pennridge School District. His career reflected his deep appreciation for language, literature, and learning.

Richard proudly served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was a voracious reader who could often be found with a book in hand. Among his favorites was Les Misérables, which he read over 100 times. He also enjoyed working crossword puzzles; and always did them in pen. He appreciated classical music and Irish step music and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan.

He loved spending time at the beach and would often brave the cold Atlantic Ocean without a second thought. Richard remained an enthusiastic golfer well into his later years, playing as recently as last year. On the golf course, he was especially fond of his trusty five wood.

Above all else, Richard loved his family. His grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart, and the time he spent with them brought him tremendous joy.

Richard will be lovingly remembered by his son, Philip D. Girard and his wife, Lisa; daughter, Amy G. Black and her husband, Jonathan; grandchildren, Bryn and husband, Curtis, Aaron, Griffin, and Rachel; great-grandchildren, Harper and Adeline; as well as his extended family and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018. Words of remembrance to celebrate Richard's life will be shared at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private.
