Rocco W. Bambu

April 9, 1946 — November 21, 2023

Rocco W. Bambu, 77, a passionate and dedicated public servant of Bethlehem, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital-Fountain Hill. He was the husband of Julieann (Melinsky) Bambu. Rocco was born in Fountain Hill on April 9, 1946 to the late Paul J. and Agnes D. (Chicalese) Bambu. He served our country faithfully in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Rocco was a member of Saints Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Bethlehem.


Officer Rocco was known for his friendly nature and infectious humor, always bringing a smile to those around him. He attended Bethlehem Catholic High School, graduating with the class of 1964. He furthered his education at the Allentown Police Academy, where he laid the foundation for a lifelong career in public service. As a Bethlehem City Patrol Officer from 1971-1978, he actively worked to ensure the safety of his community.


In 1978, Rocco took on the role of School Safety Officer for the City of Bethlehem Police Department. Here, he coordinated the school safety patrol program with the Bethlehem Area School District Elementary Schools, showcasing his dedication to the safety of younger generations. Rocco developed and participated in Operation Safeguard, a voluntary fingerprinting program for minors, and also administered the Bicycle Registration Program.


In 1996, Rocco transitioned to the role of Property/Evidence Officer until his retirement in 2001. From 2001-2013 he worked for the Bethlehem Parking Authority as a Contract Parking Coordinator. His commitment to his work was evident in his tireless dedication to his community.


Rocco was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Star Lodge #20. His passion for his work and his lively personality left a lasting impact on all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to the service and protection of others. His legacy of commitment, laughter, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of many. In his retirement he dedicated his time to Leo being a wonderful ”Pop”.

Survivors: in addition to his loving wife of 50 years; daughters: Heather M. (Craig E. Weiss) Bambu, Alison J. (Richard M.) LaPointe; grandson: Leo M. LaPointe. Predeceased in death by his brother: Frederick Bambu.


Service: Family and friends are invited to his visitation 9:30-10:30am Friday, December 1, 2023 at the Connell Funeral Home, Inc., 245 East Broad Street, Bethlehem. Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy will be held at 11am Friday, December 1, 2023 at Saints Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, 1140 Johnston Drive, Bethlehem, PA 18017.
